Partner 6: PreSens Precision Sensing GmbH, Regensburg, Germany

Based on research activities started in the 1980's PreSens was founded in 1997 as a spin off from the University of Regensburg and is today one of the leading companies in the field of chemical optical sensors. Starting from the niche market of microsensors, PreSens now offers a broad range of sensor systems and distributes its products and services worldwide. It is a also a manufacturer of OEM parts for chemical optical sensors integrated in a manifold of bioreactors and thus already offers flow-through sensors for perfusion bioreactors.

The Fibox product line allows non-invasive measurements in bioreactors with oxygen sensors based on a 2 mm optical fibre. This ensures contamination free processes. The Microx product line is based on oxygen microsensors with sensors smaller then 140 µm, offering high spatial resolution (below 50 µm) and very short response times (under one second). Chemical optical sensors are used in biotechnological, biological and medical applications as well as in the food and beverage industry.

PreSens offers licensing of patents and technology for fluorescent analytics based on the dual lifetime referencing (DLR) method. It holds the main DLR patent plus patents related to the technology.

Role in the project: PreSens will integrate chemical optical sensors for pH and oxygen in the bioreactors, adapt existing and develop new sensors according to the special demands of the project. It will also develop in-line measurement in tissue (relying on the technology of microsensors which has been established for measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO) for 10 years), adapt and deliver sensors to the partners, as well as provide support in data interpretation.
